WHAT IS HIATAL HERNIA?
A Hiatal Hernia occurs when a strong ring like muscle, that acts like a vavle and is located at the end of the esophagus (food pide), relaxes and allows the stomach's acidic juices to move back up into the esophagus causing reflux disease (heartburn and acidic or bitter taste in the mouth). In some cases the stomach protrudes into the esophagus.
WHAT CAUSES A HIATAL HERNIA ?
The cause of a Hiatal Hernia is unknown. However, a large number of people have this condition. Factors that make the valve open include fatty foods, whole milk, chocolate, alcoholic beverages, cigarette smoking, lying on your side, and sitting. Foods that irritate the esophagus and worsen the symptoms include cirtus juices, grapefruit, orange, pineapple, tomatoes, coffee, and soft drinks containing caffeine.
WHAT TREATMENT IS NECESSARY ?
Treatment includes lifestyle changes and, in some cases, medications. To decrese symptoms, eat small amounts high in protein and low in fat. Do not eat anything 3 hours before bedtime. Avoid the above factors whihc make the valve open and those which irritate the esophagus. Weight loss can help symptoms by lessening pressure on the abdomen. Avoid tight fitting clothes and actiivites that increase abdominal pressure. Stop smoking. Medications the doctor might prescribe include antacids to neutralize acid in the stomach and medicine to reduce the amount of acid that is produced. If you have no symptoms, no treatment is necessary. Discuss with your doctor, if you have any questions or concerns.
